Privacy Policy

This policy explains what OpenWriting Coach collects, why, and what you can do about it. We keep it simple, because we collect very little.

What we collect

We do not run ads. We do not track you across other websites. We never sell your data. And we do not collect anything we do not need.

Cookies

OpenWriting Coach uses exactly one cookie: owc_session. It keeps you signed in, and nothing else — since the site cannot know who you are without it, this cookie is strictly necessary and is set no matter which option you choose below.

How the AI coach works

When you press "Coach me", the text of that entry is sent to our AI provider so it can generate corrections, explanations, and word suggestions. The same thing happens when you submit a daily challenge or the benchmark test, so that your writing can be scored and your target words checked. Those are the only times your writing leaves our systems, and each time it happens so the coach can do its job.

Because of this, please do not put sensitive personal details — like passwords, financial information, or health records — inside your entries.

Usage data

We record how the product is used so we can see where it is confusing or broken — for example that a challenge was served and then submitted, that a target word was used correctly, how much XP was earned, or how long the coach took to reply.

These records hold counts and labels only. They never contain your writing, the text of a prompt, or anything the coach said about your entry. They are linked to your account's internal id, and they contain no email address, no username, and no IP address. We use them in aggregate, to improve the product.

We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics for page views. It is privacy-first: it sets no cookies, does not fingerprint you, and does not track you across other sites.

Public and private entries

Every entry is private by default, and only you can see it. If you choose to make an entry public, that entry — including the coach's report on it — becomes visible to anyone, on your profile and in the community feed. You can switch an entry back to private at any time.

How long we keep your data

We keep your account and your writing while your account is active, so your progress and entries are there when you come back.

Your rights

You are in control of your data. You can:

To delete your account, email us at hello@openwritingcoach.com and we will remove your account and its data. We aim to honor privacy rights in line with laws such as the GDPR (Europe) and the CCPA (California), wherever you live.

Children

OpenWriting Coach is not for children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not use the site or send us your information. (See the Terms for age rules in the EEA.)

Where your data is stored

OpenWriting Coach runs on a global content network, so our servers and providers may be in different countries. That means your data may be processed outside the country where you live. We take care to protect it wherever it is handled.
